BSA Praises Obama’s Choice for New Federal CTO

CTO’s visionary role will apply technology solutions to America’s challenges

Washington, DC – April 18, 2009

The Business Software Alliance (BSA) is applauding President Barack Obama’s choice of Aneesh Chopra to become the United States’ first Chief Technology Officer (CTO). The selection of Chopra, currently Virginia’s Secretary of Technology, was announced this morning in the President’s weekly video address.

“Aneesh Chopra is a superb choice,” said BSA President and CEO Robert Holleyman. “He will bring a unique combination of vision and real-world experience to the role.”

“We are equally encouraged by the visionary role that the President has planned for the CTO: that he will be a member of the President’s senior economic policy team; will play a leading role in putting IT to work for the American people; and will serve as an ‘evangelist’ for policies to spur innovation and economic growth.”

In a December 4 letter to Obama, Holleyman said the IT industry would strongly support the creation of the position, and recommended that the CTO be given a set of assignments similar to those outlined today.

BSA also praised the recent selection of Vivek Kundra to serve as federal Chief Information Officer.

“President Obama, Aneesh Chopra and Vivek Kundra understand that IT offers an enormous array of solutions to the challenges facing our nation and world,” said Holleyman. “We stand ready to work with them to ensure that the technology sector can maximize its contributions to open government, economic growth and social progress.”
