Public Policy

BSA is the leading voice for the high tech industry in capitals around the world and before multilateral organizations, advocating innovation and competition in the commercial software industry, stronger intellectual property protection, cyber security, reduction of trade barriers, liberal use of encryption technology and other emerging technology issues. Leaders of BSA’s member companies work together to formulate critical industry policy positions to enhance and facilitate the continued success of electronic commerce and the hardware and software industries.

Education

To help increase public awareness of copyright laws, encourage legal use of legitimate software and explain the consequences of software piracy, BSA develops and makes available information and tools to software users, including resellers, businesses, consumers and students. Those resources include a free “Guide to Software Management” and a software audit tool that inventories installed software for comparison with license agreements. BSA’s programs educate decision-makers in organizations on the legal consequences and potentially high cost of illegal software use as well as online safety issues. Our ultimate goal is to demonstrate to organizations and consumers the legal and practical risks associated with software piracy. To this end, BSA provides resources and information to help users become legally compliant and stay safe online.

Anti-Piracy

BSA operates approximately 65 hotlines around the world for callers who seek information about piracy or who wish to report suspected incidents of software piracy. BSA takes action against software resellers and end-user organizations that make unauthorized copies of software and works closely with law enforcement agencies to coordinate enforcement of criminal copyright laws. BSA’s enforcement program has been instrumental in bringing thousands of organizations into software compliance with software copyright compliance, closing down pirate Internet sites, stopping the illegal sale of pirated software through Internet auction sites and pirated software retail outlets, and seizing illegal CD presses. All money collected from settlements is used to fund the organization’s education and enforcement programs.
