Media coverage of BSA’s outreach in Brazil was topped by prominent exclusive interviews with BSA’s Robert Holleyman and Microsoft’s Brad Smith in Valor Econômico, Brazil’s leading business paper. Valor noted a drop in Brazil’s software piracy rate and reported that BSA is “going to raise investments and initiatives in Brazil … due to its sector growth projections.” Several articles reported favorably on BSA’s meeting with Justice Minister Tarso Genro, who voiced strong support for combating piracy through legal, educational and economic means. And the awards were the subject of several reports; a typical headline was, “Software industry honors Brazilian technology pioneers during BSA’s World Summit.” BSA also published a March 27 ad in Valor Econômico, featuring a photograph of Presidents Lula and Obama and highlighting their commitment to technology and innovation in their economic growth agendas.

Setor vai intensificar combate à pirataria nas companhias Date: 03/26/2009Summary: “Sector will intensify combat to piracy in companies”. The article states that the biggest software piracy problem is in companies, that BSA is going to raise investments and initiatives in Brazil, and that the organization will carry out its world meeting for the first time in Brazil, which will feature awards to innovative projects developed in the country. It says BSA has had an increased focus in Brazil since 2007, before the crisis, due to its sector growth projections. It mentions the drop in the piracy rate, the rise of total losses and Holleyman’s and Caramuru’s quotes on the piracy/crisis relation (no immediate relation confirmed) and tax reduction on software (not on BSA’s priority list). The article reports the meeting of the minister with BSA’s executives, mentions IDC economic impacts for piracy reduction and quotes the minister: “only by combating piracy will we guarantee fair competition in the market. We also must carry out and educational innitiaves to end a cultural tendency of buying the pirated product because of its price”. Combat must have repressive, educational and economic actions.
