BSA Commends Obama’s Commitment to R&D, Welcomes House Committee Action on R&D Bills

Washington, DC – April 29, 2009

The Business Software Alliance (BSA), which represents the world’s leading software companies and their hardware partners, today applauded President Barack Obama’s newly announced goal of investing at least 3 percent of the United States’ gross domestic product in research and development (R&D), to push for a permanent  extension of the federal R&D tax credit, and to expand related programs.

“BSA applauds the President’s strong commitment to advancing progress in science and technology,” said BSA President and CEO Robert Holleyman. “In the current economic situation, strong R&D policies are more crucial than ever to help revive the US economy and strengthen long-term growth and progress. Enhancing R&D and related education programs are key components of BSA’s Technology Policy Agenda.”

Holleyman added:  “BSA member companies are at the forefront of global innovation, devoting double-digit percentages of their revenues to R&D programs that are developing the solutions of tomorrow.  We look forward to working with the Administration, Congress, and the science and technology community to accelerate basic and applied research and the educational programs that support them.”

BSA also is lauding the US House Committee on Science and Technology for approving legislation to improve the United States’ networking, information technology, international science and technology cooperation, and education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The legislation approved this week was H.R. 2020, the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development Act of 2009; H.R. 1709, the Science and Technology Cooperation Act of 2009; and H.R. 1709, the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Education Coordination Act of 2009.
