SOFTWARE VENDORS: Support BSA SAM Advantage

Many leading software publishers are providing significant input into the design of BSA SAM Advantage.

Software publishers benefit when their customers are able to reap the full value of their software and plan more effectively for the lifecycle of their software. Both outcomes will be achieved with BSA SAM Advantage.

In addition, BSA SAM Advantage will help combat the problem of illegal software use, a problem which cuts into the revenues of software vendors and partners, hampering their ability to hire workers and maximize the development of new products and services. BSA SAM Advantage will benefit software publishers by creating a common, globally recognized methodology to help prevent unlicensed use of software.

BSA SAM Advantage will create a platform of independent SAM practitioners with best-in-class training who will ensure that SAM projects are implemented consistently and effectively. By providing a clearer picture of the business value of SAM and making the benefits of SAM implementation more attainable, it will also help build the business case for further SAM investments.

Do software developers support SAM programs?

Software developers recognize the need for organizations of all sizes to invest in a SAM program that enables them to achieve license compliance and obtain the cost savings and risk management benefits that are derived from SAM. Until now, with the SAM industry in its relative infancy, software developers have taken a variety of approaches to SAM. BSA and the world’s leading software developers recognized that SAM-adopting organizations were often confused about which was the best approach.

To overcome this challenge, BSA worked closely with the ISO to ensure that BSA SAM Advantage will provide a clear route to the global standard. When it is fully launched in 2009, BSA SAM Advantage will be the only SAM program created with input from many of the world’s leading software companies, guided by the ISO, and sponsored by a global nonprofit organization.

What makes BSA SAM Advantage different from other SAM programs?

BSA SAM Advantage will be the first independent, global software asset management program built on the ISO standard that enables companies of all sizes and industries to take a clear and measurable route to comprehensive SAM through best-in-class training and resources. Because it is based on a global standard rather than a country- or vendor-specific standard, organizations can embark on the process with confidence that their investments will not be wasted if they later extend their programs to other countries or operations. BSA SAM Advantage also will be the first program that simplifies ISO/IEC 19770-1 conformance by breaking it down into four, step-by-step tiers.

David Bicket, Convener of the ISO’s Working Group for 19770-1:
“Our group recently undertook a world-wide survey which demonstrated that an incremental approach like BSA SAM Advantage is definitely needed. In delivering this, and in providing a clear route towards the standard, I believe BSA SAM Advantage is firmly focused on meeting real business requirements. The approach proposed by the BSA is now being officially trialled as a potential future international standard itself.”

Michael Beare, Director, Channel, Genuine Software Initiative at Microsoft:
“Current SAM training structures don’t take into account the sheer diversity of SAM needs and expectations among businesses. BSA SAM Advantage will provide breadth of resources and flexibility in implementation, enabling us to deliver high-value support and to steer our customers towards achieving software asset management optimization.”
