BSA Policy Issues in Europe

The software industry is one of the fastest growing segments of the world's economy — creating millions of jobs and generating innovations that are rapidly transforming all aspects of society; from business to government to the ways individuals communicate. These rapid transformations are also spawning new legislative and regulatory initiatives around the world. As policymakers contemplate initiatives that will impact the future of this dynamic industry, the Business Software Alliance works to advance policy solutions that promote innovation, job creation, and economic growth.

Copyright and Intellectual Property
Strong copyright laws are essential to the health and growth of the software industry, but the BSA opposes efforts to impose government-mandated technology standards in the name of copyright protection. >>

Security and Cybercrime
As builders of the products that power and protect the world's information networks, BSA members are committed to developing a safe and legal online world through market-driven security systems and industry-led standards. >>

Piracy and Enforcement
Software theft costs industry billions of euros each year – resources that could otherwise be invested in research and development of new products. Apart from this loss of revenue, such theft can lessen a nation’s industrial competitiveness and economic well-being. To combat software theft, the BSA supports strong legislation enforced by deterrent penalties. >>

Trade and E-Commerce
The global vitality of an electronic marketplace depends upon free and open trade, as well as on a solid and flexible legal framework for e-commerce. Tariffs, regulations, and similar barriers to e-commerce raise costs and can price many smaller, competitive firms out of the market. And, where e-commerce laws are unclear or overly restrictive, individuals and businesses may lack the confidence to trade online. >>
