EU Commission Decision to Preserve “Safe Harbor” Framework Essential to Growth of the Transatlantic Economy, Says BSA

BRUSSELS — November 27, 2013 — BSA | The Software Alliance today acknowledged the European Commission’s decision to preserve and strengthen the EU-US Safe Harbor mechanism for the transfer of data across transatlantic borders. BSA commended the European Commission for recognizing the importance the Safe Harbor framework has in delivering benefits at the core of the digital economy.

“There is no question the US-EU Safe Harbor mechanism underpins the $5.3 trillion transatlantic economy, and Europe has reaped tremendous economic benefits from the Safe Harbor decision. Thousands of European and US companies are certified under the framework and take compliance very seriously,” said Thomas Boué, BSA Director of Government Relations, EMEA. “The data needs of European citizens and enterprises are evolving rapidly, and we support the approach taken in today’s report of proceeding carefully in ensuring the Safe Harbor framework works well and reflects changes in practices and the marketplace.”
