President’s State of the Union Address Underscores Importance of Innovation Issues for Economic Growth

WASHINGTON — January 28, 2014 —

BSA | The Software Alliance today welcomed plans outlined by President Obama in his State of the Union address to spur economic growth by addressing issues that are critical for software and other innovative industries.

On Trade:

“I commend President Obama and leaders in Congress for pursuing an ambitious trade agenda,” said BSA President and CEO Victoria Espinel. “The trade deals that the United States is negotiating create a tremendous opportunity to spur growth and job creation in the digital economy. We need them to be forward-looking agreements that promote sales and exports of software-driven products and services like cloud computing and data analytics.”

On Data:

“We welcome the Administration’s commitment to restore trust in the digital economy by improving transparency and increasing safeguards in US intelligence gathering,” said Espinel. “We look forward to working with the Administration and Congress to advance an international dialogue on the need for shared norms on surveillance practices. As this debate unfolds, it will be important not to conflate separate issues. National security concerns need not and should not be allowed to undermine technology innovation and economic growth.”

On Patents:

“We appreciate President Obama’s efforts to continue improving the world’s best patent system,” Espinel said. “The patent system has long been an important source of competitive advantage for the United States. By improving patent quality and taking other steps to make life better for innovators and harder for bad actors, we can ensure that continues to be the case in the years ahead.”

On Immigration:

“Developing and retaining highly skilled workers remains a critical priority for software and many other industries,” said Espinel. “We appreciate President Obama’s support for meaningful reforms to the H1-B visa and employment-based green card systems. It will allow more highly trained and educated professionals to come to the United States and contribute to the development of new innovations that drive growth and job creation.”
