BSA Supports Updated EU Cybersecurity Strategy, Encourages International Solution to Cyber Threats

BRUSSELS, 13 September 2017 — BSA | The Software Alliance welcomes today’s publication by the European Commission of an update to its 2013 EU Cybersecurity Strategy and commends it for the steps it continues to take to strengthen the EU’s cyber resilience and build trust in the Digital Single Market.

“Cybersecurity is a critical issue for BSA and it remains at the core of the services our Members provide. We therefore support the Commission’s proposal to strengthen ENISA through a permanent mandate and the key role ENISA will play in facilitating the exchange of cross-sectoral cybersecurity best practices”, said Thomas Boué, Director General, Policy – EMEA.

Commenting on the Commission’s proposal to set up an EU certification framework, Boué said: “While we welcome its voluntary nature, we remain skeptical about the proposed EU certification framework. Any certification schemes must be flexible, consensus-based and industry-led. The cyber threat landscape is global in nature and thus requires international solutions. We caution against the development of a regional EU scheme as this would do little to raise Europe’s cyber resilience.”
