Globally accepted principles are important to facilitate trade

The Business Software Alliance today welcomed the Obama Administration’s call for a Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights that protects Internet users while promoting continued innovation in the digital economy.
“The Administration’s blueprint points the way to a robust, yet flexible framework for protecting people’s privacy while encouraging innovation,” said BSA President and CEO Robert Holleyman. “I welcome the call for voluntary codes of conduct that are developed with stakeholder input and based on globally accepted principles. BSA member companies operate globally, so we believe it is essential that the Administration pursue policies that enable digital commerce and trade.”
“By emphasizing that privacy practices should be flexible enough to accommodate the full range of consumer and business needs, the Administration’s plan will encourage continued innovation and drive economic growth,” Holleyman said. “Prescriptive technology mandates would stifle the development of new products and services, and discourage adoption of better privacy practices.”
“Flexible rules of the road for doing business on the Internet also will provide much-needed regulatory certainty,” said Holleyman. “We look forward to actively engaging in the stakeholder process that will put these privacy principles into practice, and we believe the Administration’s balanced approach provides a sound basis for Congressional work on privacy.”
