BSA | The Software Alliance today presented a Cyber Champion Award to US Trade Representative Ron Kirk in recognition of his leadership in promoting the growth of digital commerce by pressing for robust intellectual property protections and greater access to overseas markets for software and other IT products and services.
“Ambassador Kirk has worked tirelessly to knock down a new wave of protectionist barriers that lock American IT out of key overseas markets,” said BSA President and CEO Robert Holleyman. “He has launched negotiations for the Trans-Pacific Partnership and has advanced proposals on cross-border data flows and other issues critical to the growth of the cloud computing market. He successfully delivered free trade agreements with Columbia, Panama, and Korea. And he has secured meaningful commitments from China to curb software piracy.”
“With the Cyber Champion Award, we recognize the outstanding contributions Ambassador Kirk has made to the growth of the digital economy,” Holleyman said. “The award is our way of saying thank you on behalf of an industry that depends on having free and fair access to overseas markets to grow and create jobs.”
BSA established the Cyber Champion Award in 1998 to recognize policymakers for their leadership in promoting policies that strengthen the high-tech industry and create high-skill, high-wage jobs for millions of Americans. Past recipients of the award include former Commerce Secretary William Daley and former US Trade Representatives Charlene Barshefsky and Susan Schwab. Congressional recipients have included Reps. Eric Cantor (R-Va.), John Conyers (D-Mich.), Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.), Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), and Lamar Smith (R-Texas), and Sens. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.).
