AI & Emerging Technologies

Software innovation has fostered the development of a range of cutting-edge technologies that offer great promise to improve lives and help solve intractable problems. BSA seeks to help educate policymakers as they consider public policy issues that these new technologies and their adoption might raise. BSA supports:

  • efforts to modernize government systems, including through the adoption of cloud and analytics, to improve data security and expand the benefits that can be derived from data
  • a streamlined regulatory approach that promotes the development and adoption of cutting-edge technologies and analytics tools associated with emerging technologies, such as the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence.

Artificial Intelligence

The range of potential benefits from the smart use of artificial intelligence (AI) is vast. AI solutions are already leading to improvements in healthcare, advances in education, more robust accessibility tools, stronger cybersecurity, and increased business productivity and competitiveness. AI also has the potential to generate substantial economic growth and enable governments to provide better and more responsive government services while addressing some of their most pressing societal challenges.

On December 12, 2017, President and CEO Victoria Espinel testified before the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation, and the Internet. She focused on defining AI and on how the US can better prepare for the future. BSA also created a short primer on understanding AI to explain how AI is a tool that improves decision-making and to illustrate the many areas where AI is already visible around the world. On March 22, 2018, BSA sent a letter supporting the FUTURE of AI Act of 2017 to Sens. Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Todd Young (R-IN) and Reps. John Delaney (D-MD) and Pete Olson (R-TX), the bill’s sponsors. The bill would create a federal advisory committee to examine a range of issues that would help maximize the potential of AI.
