BSA Calls for Inclusion of AI Regulation in ADPPA

CompsMag, April 27, 2023

BSA | The Software Alliance’s Vice President of US Government Relations Craig Albright talks about how regulatory measures would help build trust in AI by ensuring compliance in “high-risk” systems used to make consequential decisions.

One of the crucial issues that ADPPA addresses is the protection against the discriminatory output of AI in business settings. The bill aims to prevent companies from collecting, transferring, or using data that discriminates based on factors such as sex, race, disability, or other factors that limit people’s access to goods and services. Companies must test their systems for this flaw and allow the government to review those tests, and the BSA also supports the idea of certification with a federal regulator.

According to Albright, these regulatory measures would help build trust in AI by ensuring compliance in “high-risk” systems used to make consequential decisions. Businesses that use AI in decisions regarding credit, housing, employment, healthcare, or insurance would fall under these regulations. That includes requiring companies to submit design reviews and impact assessments for their AI systems.
