Communications Coordinator

The Communications Coordinator/Manager will work as part of a small team on external communications activities that support BSA’s policy goals, corporate positioning, and reputation. A successful individual will bring strong writing and editing skills, a record of accomplishment engaging the media to shape stories on policy issues, social media fluency, and experience managing communications projects and initiatives with demonstrable results.

The Coordinator/Manager will work closely with the Senior Director, Global Communications and must be able to thrive in a fast-paced environment, collaborating effectively with BSA policy staff and outside PR agencies to deliver value against operational goals. The Coordinator/Manager will develop an in-depth knowledge of BSA, its member companies, and the association’s high-priority issues, including privacy, trade, cybersecurity, and emerging tech such as artificial intelligence.

Professional Experience and Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of communications experience in a PR agency, Capitol Hill or government office, trade association, think tank, or corporate communications office required.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, oral communications and listening skills.
  • Media relations skills and experience preferred.
  • Excellent understanding and command of social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn, and experience managing social media accounts on behalf of an organization and/or executive.
  • Project management skills and ability to execute high-quality work in a fast-paced environment under deadline pressure required.
  • Familiarity working effectively and proactively within large media databases such as Cision.
  • Ability to learn quickly and condense complex information from diverse sources into concise, attractive, user-friendly formats.
  • Positive, problem-solving mindset, combined with ability to work collaboratively with diverse professionals at all levels of seniority.
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects while meeting deadlines, coupled with flexibility and willingness to pitch in on occasion for projects differing from daily/standard duties.
  • Experience planning and running virtual events is a plus.
  • Must possess a proactive, self-sufficient, can-do attitude.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the Communications team’s daily work and key programs, including media relations and press analytics, social media, member relations, website, and broader communications initiatives related to BSA’s policy agenda.
  • Draft press releases, blog posts, talking points, briefing materials, and other messaging as needed, and act as proofreader/copy editor when requested.
  • Serve as a point of contact for the news media — vetting and responding to inquiries, arranging interviews, and managing the preparation of background materials for BSA spokespeople including pitch scripts, executive briefing materials and anticipated Q&A.
  • Coordinate with BSA’s PR agency partners to help manage communications projects such as launching major research reports and organizing events.
  • Monitor and track daily news and developments relating to, or impacting, BSA and BSA member companies. Compile related press reports and analytics as needed/requested for various uses by senior staff and CEO.
  • Lead social media engagement by identifying and growing influencers; heading issue-specific, strategic, paid campaigns; and producing daily content for BSA Twitter handle.
  • Support Senior Director, Global Communications in various communications - related projects as needed, some of which may be late-breaking.
  • Serve as a resource for overseas BSA communications staff and overseas PR firms related to BSA social media best practices and shareable resources.
  • Manage BSA’s communications intern.
  • Support BSA’s events, both in-person and virtual.
