BSA Statement on EARN IT Act

WASHINGTON – March 5, 2020 – BSA | The Software Alliance released the following statement on today’s introduction of the EARN IT Act by Senators Richard Blumenthal, Lindsey Graham, Josh Hawley, and Dianne Feinstein.

“Safeguarding children and helping the victims who have suffered from exploitation is an urgent priority. We must ensure that the government has the right policies and resources in place to combat the spread of exploitative and illegal content and prosecute those who are responsible for these horrible acts,” said Craig Albright, Vice President, Legislative Strategy at BSA | The Software Alliance. “BSA members share the goals of the bill’s sponsors and are continuing to take actions to combat this exploitation. As Congress considers this legislation, it’s important to take into account the critical role encryption plays in online safety and as the first line of defense in combatting cybercrime, protecting critical infrastructure, and preserving national security. We look forward to working with Congress to provide needed help to the victims of exploitation and prevent further abuse, while making sure legislation doesn’t have the effect of undermining cybersecurity.”
