Data Space Roadmap
Politico, August 3, 2020
Governments, industry, and activists had until last Friday to submit their feedback to the Commission’s consultation on how to regulate a European single market for data. The Commission wants to create a European data economy that will be based on several “data spaces” that allow different sectors to share data. The bill will land later this year, and its purpose is to help the public sector share data, support voluntary private sector data sharing for the “wider public good,” and lower the cost of sharing data.
IBM wanted any mandatory data sharing in the name of “public interest” to be “carefully balanced against the costs and risks” and be based on a “context-specific approach.” Microsoft called for standardized data agreements, as well as “greater clarity” on how the widest range of players who comply with EU law can participate. Lobby BSA had similar requests, and wanted the scope of the framework to “clearly identify what types of data will feed into the data spaces.”
