Don’t quarantine the cloud

Which way forward for Europe in the rapidly expanding cloud-computing market? Policymakers and industry rightly see a golden opportunity to harness this exciting innovation. But there are major challenges. Chief among them are the practicalities of harmonising laws and regulations on data security, privacy, and other issues central to a truly cohesive digital single market.

Europe has a number of distinct advantages. The research firm IDC projects that global annual sales of public IT cloud services – including software, server, and data-storage – will reach €55 billion by 2015.
