BSA Helps Bring ‘Girls Who Code’ to Washington, DC

WASHINGTON, DC — December 15, 2014 —

BSA | The Software Alliance today announced that it will sponsor the Washington, DC inaugural Girls Who Code 2015 Summer Immersion Program as part of its mission to help close the gender gap in technology.

“Software innovation is dramatically changing the world and helping to solve some of our most difficult challenges. The benefits of that innovation, however, won’t be fully realized unless we have the right people with the vision and skills to create these tools. The software industry offers some of the most exciting job opportunities but there are far too few women in technology. To close the tech gender gap, we need to encourage young women to learn about software engineering and how they can be a part of such a dynamic industry,” said BSA President and CEO Victoria Espinel.

There is a growing demand for skilled software developers. U.S. News and World Report ranked software developers as the best job of 2014, with employment expected to grow by 23 percent by 2022. However, less than a quarter of technical jobs today are filled by women.

Espinel said, “Girls Who Code is a remarkable organization that is empowering girls to take on new challenges and opening doors for young women in the software industry. BSA is proud to sponsor this year’s inaugural Summer Immersion Program in Washington, DC and help bring this important initiative to the nation’s capital.”

The seven-week Summer Immersion Program allows participants to learn everything from mobile app development to robotics to web design, and ultimately get a chance to build the products they want to see in the world. The application for the 2015 Summer Immersion Program will be available January 15, 2015. Girls can complete an interest form now at
