BSA Welcomes Early House Passage of Email Privacy Act

WASHINGTON — February 6, 2017 — Late today, the House of Representatives passed the Email Privacy Act of 2017 (H.R. 387). BSA | The Software Alliance thanks Reps. Kevin Yoder (R-KS), Jared Polis (D-CO), Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), and John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) for reintroducing the bill early in the year. This legislation would update the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) to ensure that law enforcement agencies obtain a warrant before compelling access to our email and other stored electronic documents and files. BSA is pleased that the House adopted this legislation by voice vote. We look forward to working with the Senate to enact it into law, as well as helping with future ECPA reforms affecting law enforcement access to data stored overseas.
