Package of House Cyber Bills Marks Significant Progress toward Much-Needed Upgrade of US Security Posture, Says BSA

FISMA reform, R&D measures cap a week of accomplishments

Washington, DC — April 27 —

The Business Software Alliance today commended the House of Representatives for passing bills to improve oversight of government computer systems and increase investment and coordination of key research and development efforts on cybersecurity. The bills, passed Thursday evening and Friday, capped a week of accomplishment in the House that began with amendments, debate, and passage of the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA).

“The House made important progress this week on cybersecurity,” said BSA President and CEO Robert Holleyman. “In passing CISPA yesterday, Members voted to untie the hands of IT professionals when they see cyber threats unfolding. Now there is a full package of measures on the table that complement each other to significantly upgrade America’s cybersecurity posture.”

“Last night’s vote on Congressman Issa’s Federal Information Security Amendments Act was critical because it will improve the security of federal computer systems so government can do more to lead by example,” Holleyman said. “And now, with the passage of cyber R&D bills sponsored by Congressmen Hall and McCaul, Members have voted to marshal the combined innovative capacity of the public and private sectors to more effectively defend computer networks against hackers, cyber criminals, and spies.”

“The House has acted,” said Holleyman. “We urge the Senate to move forward quickly with legislation to enhance the country’s cybersecurity capabilities while protecting citizens’ privacy and civil liberties.”
