Technological Sovereignty and the Cloud: A Challenge That Pushes Europe to Change Its Rules
Alliancy, October 27, 2022
By Dorian Marcellin
Director, General Policy – EMEA Thomas Boué at BSA | The Software Alliance addresses EUCS and how the text should be a conversation at the level of the transversal working group on telecom and the horizontal cyber issue working group.
"We don't see alternatives on the cloud to the various hyperscalers. So yes, there are tensions between Western countries, but they are also allies. Difficulties are diplomatic subjects," said Thomas Boué, who believes that the OECD and the G7, the discussion and economic partnership group that brings together the United States, France, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan and Italy, are the best channels to address doubts about trusted clouds.
"We are mobilized with these institutions, because for us we must above all build safeguards limiting the temptation of governments on both sides to touch the data used by citizens and companies. A sound basis for negotiation must be redefined. We hope that an agreement at OECD level will be reached in the coming weeks to rebuild the trust that was lost due to Edward Snowden's revelations in 2013 about spying practices."
