BSA Welcomes Oregon Consumer Privacy Act

WASHINGTON – July 19, 2023 – BSA | The Software Alliance applauds the enactment of consumer privacy legislation in Oregon. Matthew Lenz, Senior Director of State Advocacy at BSA | The Software Alliance, released the following statement on the enactment of SB 619 B.

“The enterprise software industry appreciates Oregon’s effort to enact a consumer data privacy law that creates new privacy protections for Oregon residents and adopts the same structural model for protecting consumer privacy as other leading state privacy laws. Oregon joins a growing number of states that recognize the need to protect consumer data consistently across state lines.

Importantly, the Oregon Consumer Privacy Act clearly reflects the different roles and obligations of controllers and processors of personal data, a distinction that ultimately strengthens consumer privacy rights and is included in all 12 state comprehensive consumer privacy laws.

BSA will continue to work with state and federal lawmakers to help pass legislation that establishes new consumer rights over their personal data and creates new safeguards to protect personal data.”

For background: A total of 12 US states have now passed comprehensive consumer privacy laws. Oregon becomes the seventh state to pass a comprehensive consumer data privacy law in 2023.
