BSA Looks to Advance Patent Reform, Fuel Digital Economy in 2015

WASHINGTON, DC — January 16, 2015 —

BSA | The Software Alliance today urged lawmakers to act on legislation to advance patent reform efforts, build trust in the data economy and ensure that global markets remain open for digital trade as it unveiled its legislative priorities for the 114th US Congress. The agenda aims to help build the global digital economy and drive policies designed for the 21st century.

“Eliminating abusive patent litigation should be a top priority for lawmakers. This is also a critical year for data and trade policies that are key to fueling the global digital economy,” said Victoria Espinel, President and CEO of BSA. “Congress has the opportunity to pass significant legislation to promote economic growth and trade, speed innovation and enhance privacy and cyber security protections. The 114th Congress must seize the moment and act on these issues in 2015.”

BSA’s 2015 Legislative Agenda focuses on patent reform and intellectual property issues, data policy, and trade and expanding global markets, as well as international procurement and human capital management.

Espinel said, “We are encouraged that leaders across the Administration and both houses of Congress have voiced their support for bipartisan action across patent, trade and data policies. Too much is at stake for our economy, our privacy and our security for another year of inaction in Washington. It’s time to move forward on these issues and we look forward to working with lawmakers to see these policies enacted.”
