BSA Statement on Consumer Online Privacy Rights Act
WASHINGTON – November 26, 2019 – BSA | The Software Alliance offered the following statement on today’s release of the Consumer Online Privacy Rights Act by Senators Maria Cantwell, Brian Schatz, Amy Klobuchar, and Ed Markey.
“Consumers deserve a strong and comprehensive federal privacy law, and we welcome the hard work the sponsors have put into this step of the process,” said Craig Albright, Vice President, Legislative Strategy at BSA | The Software Alliance. “Any lasting solution will have to be bipartisan, and we hope this step will lead toward that goal. The legislation includes a number of elements BSA has recommended. For example, we’re pleased the bill recognizes the distinct role of service providers so consumers have clarity about how to exercise their rights. We don’t agree with everything in this bill and welcome continued discussion of the best ways to protect consumers. BSA stands ready to work with the sponsors and other lawmakers on a strong federal privacy law that is worthy of being the one clear national standard.”
