BSA Submits Comments on Europe’s AI Impact Assessment
BRUSSELS – September 10, 2020 – BSA | The Software Alliance today submitted comments to the European Commission’s inception impact assessment on Artificial Intelligence (AI).
“BSA strongly supports the European Commission’s risk-based and sector-specific approach to AI legislation. Realizing the full benefits of AI will require careful examination of the intended use and impacts of the technology to ensure it is being responsibly designed and deployed,” said Matteo Quattrocchi, Senior Manager, Policy – EMEA at BSA.
“In this context, BSA recommends allocating the risk to the most appropriate entity, either the AI developer or AI deployer, much like the concept of data processor and data controller in GDPR,” Quattrocchi added. “A processor/controller distinction not only provides organizations with a clear picture of their respective legal obligations—it also helps to enhance public trust in AI systems by ensuring that data subjects’ rights are adequately protected.”
“BSA applauds the Commission’s broad consultative process on AI. We look forward to ongoing engagement with European policymakers and stakeholders as this important legislative initiative moves forward,” Quattrocchi said.
