BSA CEO Victoria Espinel Appointed to National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee

WASHINGTON – April 14, 2022 – BSA | The Software Alliance today announced that its President and CEO, Victoria Espinel, has been appointed to the National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee (NAIAC). As outlined in the National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Act of 2020, the NAIAC will advise the President on enhancing US competitiveness and leadership in artificial intelligence (AI).

“I’m honored to have the opportunity to join an incredible group of leaders as part of the National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee. AI can reshape the world we live in for the better, helping us solve previously intractable problems,” said Victoria Espinel, President and CEO of BSA | The Software Alliance. “We are in a moment in which the global policy landscape around AI is beginning to take shape, and it is crucial for the United States to consider how it can most effectively guide those conversations. To ensure that AI is used to its fullest positive potential while avoiding unintended negative impacts, we must ensure AI is created and used responsibly. Given the leading role that BSA member companies have played in the development of AI best practices, I am also thrilled to be joined on the committee by representatives from IBM, Microsoft, Salesforce, and Workday.”

During Victoria Espinel’s tenure at BSA, the organization has established itself as a leading public policy voice on trustworthy AI. Last year, BSA published a first-of-its-kind framework for managing the risk of unintended AI bias through a comprehensive impact assessment process. In its new agenda, “Enhancing Innovation and Promoting Trust: BSA’s AI Policy Agenda,” BSA lays out its five key policy pillars for AI policy frameworks. Those pillars, which include research and development, fostering a dynamic AI workforce, and building confidence and trust in AI systems, overlap with the issues that the NAIAC will focus on.
