BSA Calls on Congress to Build Off Existing State Privacy Frameworks
Politico Pro Morning Tech
By Gabby Miller and Alfred Ng
The Business Software Alliance is calling for a federal law that preempts existing state privacy regulations but wants Congress to build off the comprehensive consumer privacy framework pioneered in the states. The group appears to support legislation that includes a “right to cure” provision, which allows companies to fix alleged privacy violations within a set period of time to avoid penalties; doesn’t allow individuals the right to sue companies for violating their privacy; and obligates businesses to handle consumers’ data responsibly. (BSA counts Microsoft, OpenAI, Oracle and Zoom as members.)
