Cloud Service Providers Argue for ‘Risk-Based Approach’ To Prevent Abuse, in Response to Commerce Rulemaking

Industry groups also submitted comments last week backing up the assertions by Microsoft and Google Cloud on the security of their platforms and the damaging impact of potential regulation to IaaS platforms operating in the United States.
BSA | The Software Alliance expressed skepticism in its comments that the “regulations envisioned in President Trump’s Executive Order will produce advantages that outweigh their costs.” They wrote, “Malicious actors who are sophisticated enough to launch cyber attacks from US IaaS providers -- many of whom are supported by foreign governments -- are also sophisticated enough to evade the data collection and retention requirements envision[ed] by this EO.”
