BSA Supports European Parliament’s Approach to e-Evidence
BRUSSELS – November 15, 2019 – BSA | The Software Alliance welcomes the European Parliament’s e-Evidence draft report, recently released by MEP Birgit Sippel. BSA calls for a speedy adoption of the Regulation to ensure the establishment of EU-wide rules on law enforcement access to data.
“The European Parliament’s draft report on e-Evidence introduces much clearer liability rules for companies complying with the Regulation, strengthens the fundamental rights protections of EU citizens, and ensures that cooperation between law enforcement agencies and technology providers is fostered and balanced—not made more onerous and less transparent,” said Thomas Boué, Director General, Policy – EMEA at BSA. “BSA looks forward to working with the European Parliament to quickly reach a position on e-Evidence and bring the file to Trilogue negotiations as soon as possible,” Boué added.
BSA recently released a set of Global Best Practices for Law Enforcement Access to Digital Evidence that promote strong commitments to privacy, security, transparency, and the rule of law while fostering collaboration between policymakers, law enforcement agencies, and technology providers in fighting crime.
