BSA Statement on Europe’s Proposed AI Rules
BRUSSELS – April 21, 2021 – BSA | The Software Alliance welcomes the European Commission’s proposal for new legislation on artificial intelligence, published today, offering the following statement.
“BSA is pleased that the Commission has focused on high-risk uses and, more importantly, how to ensure that even in cases where the use of AI may bear significant risks, appropriate safeguards are in place to maximize its benefits. This is a sound approach and one that BSA has consistently advocated for,” said Thomas Boué, Director General of Policy – EMEA, at BSA.
“Today’s proposal, the first of its kind globally, will aim to set rules for a technology that is still developing, in Europe and around the world,” Boué said. “BSA therefore urges EU policymakers to engage with international partners throughout the legislative process to avoid drafting legislation in isolation. We also encourage broad multistakeholder involvement in the drafting and implementation processes. This would help make sure that European rules follow the developing lifecycle of an ever-innovating technology like AI, and that they remain transparent, fair, and fit for purpose.”
“Building trust in AI is a shared responsibility,” Boué added. “Governments, companies, and civil society must continue to work together to design systems that will be used responsibly and in ways that build public confidence. BSA and our member companies look forward to contributing to these important, ongoing discussions.”
BSA’s recent policy paper, AI For Europe, outlines three recommendations to foster innovation, create opportunities, and enhance growth in the EU. Read more here.
