EU Prepares to Push Businesses to Share Data
Wall Street Journal, February 19, 2020
By Catherine Stupp
The EU plans to draft legislation later this year that will, among other things, focus on addressing risks in AI applications that could harm privacy and consumer rights, the European Commission, the bloc’s executive body, said in two strategy papers on AI and data published Wednesday. As part of the initiative, the EU could come up with new measures such as EU-approved standard contracts for data sharing.
An EU-backed initiative to create standard conditions for corporate data sharing might reassure companies that existing EU laws, such as the General Data Protection Regulation, won’t be violated, said Thomas Boué, director general for policy in Europe, the Middle East and Africa at the Business Software Alliance, a Washington-based trade group.
