BSA Statement on Committee Passage of the American Data Privacy and Protection Act
WASHINGTON – July 20, 2022 – BSA | The Software Alliance offered the following statement on House Energy and Commerce Committee passage of the American Data Privacy and Protection Act (ADPPA), H.R. 8152, sponsored by Chairman Frank Pallone Jr. (D-NJ) and Ranking Member Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA).
“We commend the sponsors for their dedication to moving bipartisan privacy legislation successfully through the Committee. Establishing a strong, comprehensive federal privacy law is a top priority for BSA and we greatly appreciate their leadership and commitment to this effort.
“We’re pleased the Committee adopted amendments that made significant improvements to better reflect the role of service providers, which handle data on behalf of other companies. The appropriate distinction between the role of covered entities and the role of service providers is imperative to the development of privacy legislation that can work in practice while also safeguarding consumers’ data. We’re also pleased the bill now takes more of a risk-based approach as it relates to AI, and we look forward to working with the Committee to continue fine-tuning these provisions so that they promote accountability for the multiple organizations that may be involved in development and deployment of an AI system.
“BSA looks forward to working with the Committee, leadership, and other Members to continue improving the bill so that Congress can pass a comprehensive privacy bill into law,” said Craig Albright, Vice President, Legislative Strategy at BSA | The Software Alliance.
