Tech lobbyists in Washington are still grappling with what these new laws will mean for the companies they represent. But some hope that movement out of Sacramento will finally get the ball rolling on Capitol Hill when it comes to AI-enabled deepfakes.
“It's a good time for them to be looking to move some of the legislation — that they have been doing a really good job consulting with all industry sectors on — so that we can get federal protection,” said Aaron Cooper, senior vice president at BSA — The Software Alliance.
“If it's a good, strong federal law, it should preempt the state laws so that we don't have different levels of enforcement in different states,” Cooper said. The software lobbyist added that his organization has been working with Tillis and Coons on their deepfake legislation, and has also spoken about the issue with Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), Chair of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet.
