BSA Comments on AB 1018 Pause

The Business Software Alliance, which led the charge against AB 1018, was also happy to see it withdrawn, said Craig Albright, its senior vice president for U.S. government relations. The trade group, which represents San Francisco’s OpenAI, Salesforce, Asana and Dropbox, among other companies, had charged that the bill was too broad, encompassing systems that either posed little risk overall or might be used in low-risk ways.

The BSA also argued that the bill would force developers of software that could be used across a wide-range of industries to test for bias in particular applications that it might not be aware of.
Other jurisdictions that have considered similar legislation have decided that “you should be focusing on where the risks are,” Albright said.
