BSA Commends Signing of USMCA

WASHINGTON – January 29, 2020 – BSA | The Software Alliance applauds today’s signing of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The USMCA’s digital trade and intellectual property provisions are the strongest ever enacted in a US free trade agreement and will help increase American competitiveness and create jobs.

“The free flow of data across borders ensures access to cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and other software solutions that power businesses around the world. Innovative and open economies recognize the need for forward-looking digital trade agreements that allow information to move between countries,” said Aaron Cooper, Vice President, Global Policy at BSA | The Software Alliance. “Trade agreements including the USMCA and the US-Japan Digital Trade Agreement are key to promote growth in the digital economy. BSA welcomes this step forward and urges other countries to implement similarly strong digital trade agreements.”

BSA recently launched the Global Data Alliance, a cross-industry coalition of companies focused on the importance of instilling trust in the digital economy while safeguarding the ability to transfer data across borders and refraining from imposing data localization requirements.
