BSA Statement on COVID-19 Data Hearing
WASHINGTON – April 16, 2020 – BSA | The Software Alliance today submitted testimony to the Senate Commerce Committee for its hearing, “Enlisting Big Data in the Fight Against Coronavirus.” In its comments, BSA highlighted the need for a strong, comprehensive federal privacy law to promote private and secure uses of data, both in connection with the COVID-19 response and more broadly.
“Data is a critical tool in the fight against COVID-19. Different types of data can be used to track the spread of the virus, help identify and develop potential cures, and inform government’s response to the pandemic,” said Victoria Espinel, President and CEO of BSA | The Software Alliance. “The use of data to combat COVID-19 has accelerated discussions about how best to protect privacy and security. At BSA we believe that, during this uncertain time, consumers need to be able to trust that their information is being used responsibly. Companies need to use the data they have to address this challenge in a conscientious manner. One important way to encourage responsible use is strong enforceable federal privacy legislation. We appreciate the Senate Commerce Committee’s work to pass comprehensive privacy legislation and we look forward to continuing to work with the Committee to achieve this goal. This is a global health emergency and it’s critical that respect for privacy be maintained around the world as governments are working to address the pandemic.”
