BSA Opposes California AB2930 Unless Amended
WASHNGTON – BSA | The Software Alliance Senior Vice President of US Government Relations Craig Albright issued the following statement regarding pending consideration of AB2930 before the state legislature:
“California has the opportunity to take a significant step in promoting the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Addressing high-risk uses of AI – artificial intelligence used to make consequential decisions about consumers – is essential for building trust.
In order to be workable, AI legislation must clearly delineate the different roles and responsibilities along the AI value chain to create clarity for consumers regarding their rights and for businesses regarding their obligations.
BSA is concerned the latest version of AB2930 does not make the necessary changes to be workable in practice and opposes its passage unless it is amended. BSA urges members of the California Senate to continue revising the legislation to help ensure it creates clarity for the different types of actors in the AI ecosystem.
BSA commends Assemblymember Bauer-Kahan for her work to enact laws that address high-risk uses of AI and looks forward to working with leaders in the legislature as California adjourns on Saturday. We look forward to working with California lawmakers to continue developing legislation that builds trust in technology, spreads its benefits across the economy, and protects Californians.”
BSA sent a floor alert to members of the California State Senate urging them to oppose AB2930 unless amended.
For Background: BSA welcomed the introduction of AB2930 earlier this year, highlighting its focus on high-risk uses of AI. BSA outlined its concerns regarding workability of the legislation in letters sent in April and June.
