BSA Statement on Introduction of California’s AB2930 to Promote Responsible Artificial Intelligence

WASHINGTON – BSA | The Software Alliance appreciates the work of Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan to introduce AB2930, a new version of AB331, in the California State Assembly. BSA Senior Vice President of US Government Relations Craig Albright issued the following statement on the introduction of AB2930:

“AB2930 laudably focuses on high-risk uses of artificial intelligence (AI) and distinguishes between developers and deployers of AI systems. The bill also calls for using meaningful tools like impact assessments to identify and mitigate risks associated with AI. These provisions reflect solutions put forth by BSA and enterprise software companies to identify effective policies to manage high-risk AI used in consequential decision-making.

BSA looks forward to working with Assemblymember Bauer-Kahan and other leaders in the Assembly to help ensure the legislation will be workable in practice. Californians – and all Americans – deserve thoughtful rules to address risks associated with AI used in consequential decisions.

BSA commends Assemblymember Bauer-Kahan for her leadership to enact laws that address high-risk uses of AI in a way that builds trust in technology and spreads its benefits broadly across the economy. AI tools are today adding real value to businesses, consumers, and communities. We look forward to working with the California legislature to pursue balanced and effective approaches to AI regulation.”
