BSA Welcomes Signing of Modernized USMCA
WASHINGTON – November 30, 2018 – BSA | The Software Alliance praises the signing of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USCMA) today, the modernized version of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The agreement includes landmark provisions on digital trade that ensure cross-border data flows, restrict data localization, and protect source codes and algorithms, among others. These provisions will drive software innovation across North America and can serve as a jumping off point for future trade agreements, including the United States’ upcoming negotiations with Japan, the European Union, and the United Kingdom. Together with the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership that will soon enter into force, the USMCA is an important step toward creating international trade rules on data, which are essential for the global economy.
