Global Data Alliance Applauds EU Preliminary Adequacy Determination to Support Transatlantic Privacy and Data Transfers

WASHINGTON – December 13, 2022 – The Global Data Alliance (GDA) applauds the European Commission’s draft US adequacy determination, announced today in Brussels, which will help support the new EU-US Data Privacy Framework. The preliminary adequacy determination is an important step forward in joint EU and US efforts to strengthen transatlantic data privacy and security, while also promoting transatlantic cross-border data transfers and commerce.

"The EU-US Data Privacy Framework is critical in establishing a stable and resilient transatlantic relationship that supports respect for privacy and human rights as well as economic opportunity for citizens on both sides of the Atlantic,” said Joseph Whitlock, Executive Director at the Global Data Alliance. “The Framework will provide US and EU companies of all sizes and in all sectors with greater legal confidence in their ability to transfer data responsibly across the Atlantic. The Framework will also benefit millions of American and EU citizens, whose personal information will be subject to the data security and privacy controls required by the program.”

The Global Data Alliance has supported Washington and Brussels’ joint efforts to develop a new EU-US Data Privacy Framework, including through the publication of an EU Industry Report on Transatlantic Data Transfers; a US Industry Position Paper; a Letter to Presidents Biden and von der Leyen, a GDA White Paper; and various other press statements and other materials.
