BSA and Digital Due Process Coalition Call for Action on ECPA Reform
WASHINGTON — May 24, 2016 — BSA | The Software Alliance has joined dozens of civil society organizations, companies, and trade associations in urging the Senate Judiciary Committee to adopt the Email Privacy Act (H.R. 699). That bill passed the House of Representatives in April by a unanimous vote of 419-0. The committee is scheduled on Thursday to markup a Senate version of the bill, the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) Amendments Act (S. 356).
“ECPA reform is long overdue,” BSA President and CEO Victoria Espinel said. “The House-passed bill carefully and appropriately balances law enforcement’s needs for data with increased privacy protections. We urge the Committee to report the bill quickly and without amendments that would weaken the protections afforded by the bill.”
