BSA Statement on Introduction of American Data Privacy and Protection Act
Washington – June 22, 2022 – BSA | The Software Alliance offered the following statement on the introduction of the American Data Privacy and Protection Act (ADPPA), H.R. 8152, by House Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone Jr. (D-NJ) and Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA).
“We commend the sponsors for their continued leadership in working to pass bipartisan, comprehensive federal privacy legislation. A strong federal privacy law is a top priority for BSA and is only possible through bipartisan efforts in Congress.
“We’re pleased this new version of the ADPPA more effectively recognizes the important – and distinct – roles of different companies that handle consumers’ personal data. In particular, this version of the legislation better reflects the realities and role of service providers, which handle consumers’ data at the direction of their business customers. While the bill’s approach to these issues is much improved, there is more to be done and we look forward to working with lawmakers to continue to refine the bill so it can work in practice. Consumers’ data should remain safeguarded when it is handled by service providers. We also look forward to engaging the sponsors and other Members to help improve provisions regarding AI to ensure the bill sets forth a workable framework that promotes accountability for high-risk uses of the technology and prevents unintended bias.
“We appreciate the work that Ranking Member Wicker, Chairman Pallone, Ranking Member McMorris Rodgers, Chair Schakowsky, and Ranking Member Bilirakis have put into the American Data Privacy and Protection Act and look forward to continued collaboration,” said Craig Albright, Vice President, Legislative Strategy at BSA | The Software Alliance.
