BSA Welcomes Progress on AI Act, Calls for Clearer Allocation of Responsibilities
BRUSSELS – May 11, 2023 – The European Parliament today released its report on the AI Act, bringing the regulation one step closer to becoming law.
Matteo Quattrocchi, Director, Policy – EMEA at BSA | The Software Alliance, offered comment on the report and Europe’s landmark legislation.
“BSA and the global software industry are pleased with EU lawmakers’ efforts to clarify the concept of high-risk and define AI in line with international standards. At the same time, the enterprise software industry remains concerned about the allocation of responsibilities in the AI value chain and the treatment of foundation models. The rules as currently written are not tailored to reflect companies' roles in the AI ecosystem, or differences in business models and AI uses, and likely will not address some of the concerns raised by specific applications of some foundation models.
The EU is in a pole position among legislators worldwide to establish common sense, interoperable rules that will both reduce the risk of harm in the near term and prepare companies that develop or deploy AI to anticipate and take action to avoid risks as new issues emerge. BSA looks forward to continuing to work with the European Parliament, EU member states, and the European Commission to establish a balanced AI Act that maintains a risk-based approach and positions the EU as a leading global partner for the development of trustworthy AI.”
