BSA Encourages a Federal Privacy Law That Builds on Existing State Laws

Twenty states have enacted laws since 2018 to protect data privacy — including Virginia, California, Washington, Kentucky and Maryland. While many of these states used similar frameworks when drafting legislation, the laws only go so far, according to Kate Goodloe, managing director of the Business Software Alliance.
“Some states have enacted privacy laws with comprehensive protections, but they only apply to residents of certain states,” Goodloe will say in her planned testimony. “A consumer should not lose privacy protections simply because she moves from Tennessee to South Carolina.” She added that federal lawmakers should “build on the protections and obligations that states have advanced and enacted.”
