Global Data Alliance Applauds Start of UK-India FTA Negotiations

BRUSSELS, NEW DELHI – January 13, 2022 – The Global Data Alliance today voiced its support for the start of free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations between the United Kingdom (UK) and India. The talks are an important chance for the two countries to drive growth by aligning on the free movement of data across borders.

“We’re pleased that the UK and India have begun free trade agreement negotiations. We urge both countries to grow economic opportunity and digital trust alike by supporting secure cross-border data transfers in all sectors,” said Joseph Whitlock, Executive Director of the Global Data Alliance. “The responsible movement of information powers innovation and growth across nations and industries, helping to sustain commerce, protect consumers from fraud, improve health and safety, and promote social good. We stand ready to work with both India and the UK on strong, forward-looking provisions on cross-border data transfers and data localization.”
