BSA Welcomes EU-US Joint Statement of the Trade and Technology Council, Encourages Progress on Roadmap to Manage High-Risk AI
BRUSSELS – May 16, 2022 – BSA | The Software Alliance welcomes the Joint Statement of the EU-US Trade and Technology Council (TTC) released today, offering the following comment:
“One of the most important aspects of the TTC is that the EU and the United States are having much more constructive conversations about tech policy than we have seen in recent years. Today’s Joint Statement illustrates that both sides share common objectives on significant issues around the digital and green transitions, including cybersecurity, data governance, and artificial intelligence,” said Aaron Cooper, Vice President, Global Policy at BSA.
“The agreement to work on a roadmap for trustworthy AI risk-management tools, including to mitigate the risk of bias, is a particularly positive development – this is something BSA has been advocating globally, ” Cooper added.
“Ultimately, the dialogue is important for improving communications as tech policies develop on both sides of the Atlantic. And the Council’s intent to further collaborate with a range of like-minded stakeholders is critical to growing the digital economy in the EU, in the United States, and worldwide,” said Cooper. “When objectives are shared, and implementation processes are transparent, the potential to develop interoperable, international policies becomes much greater. At the end of the day, that is a good thing for governments, businesses, and consumers," said Cooper. “BSA will continue to support both sides in their efforts as discussions advance, and we look forward to the next TTC in the United States in December.”
