BSA Offers Perspectives on Senate AI
Politico Pro Morning Tech
By Mallory Culhane
Several bills on the agenda aim to boost AI research and development, including some called out by name in the Senate’s AI roadmap released earlier this year.
The Future of AI Innovation Act — introduced by Cantwell and Sen. Todd Young (R-Ind.), a member of the Senate’s AI working group — would authorize the U.S. AI Safety Institute to create voluntary safety guidelines and standards as well as new AI testbeds at U.S. national labs, among other things. The bill has the backing of several nonprofit public interest groups, research institutes and major tech companies, including Microsoft and OpenAI.
The CREATE AI ACT — which would make permanent the National AI Research Resource, a nascent effort to provide more computing resources for academic AI researchers — is also on deck. The legislation is widely supported by industry groups, including BSA | The Software Alliance.
Aaron Cooper, BSA’s senior vice president of global policy, said in a statement that both bills “are commonsense and bipartisan opportunities for Congress to act on AI policy.”
