BSA's Albright: Modernizing NAFTA Must Include Rules on Data
Bloomberg, June 29, 2017
By Bloomberg Markets AM with Pimm Fox and Lisa Abramowicz
From Craig Albright: “When we talk about modernizing NAFTA, what we’re really talking about is modernizing for digital trade… in recent years, the use of data has become fundamental to every industry, businesses of all shapes and sizes. When NAFTA was first negotiated, the negotiators of course couldn’t anticipate how technology and data would transform how our economy works. So right now there are actually no enforceable rules on data in NAFTA at all. So it’s a huge fundamental building block of our economy that has no framework and it’s a huge gap in our trading system. So we at BSA and others are advocating for the inclusion of rules on data in NAFTA to fill this gap.”
