After we reported Friday that the Business Software Alliance launched a campaign to press the flesh in Sacramento and target online ads to torpedo her bill, the legislator pushed back, although not so hard as to leave no room for negotiation.
"We appreciate the Business Software Alliance's engagement on AB 1018,” Bauer-Kahan said in a statement to Decoded. “However, their opposition letter fails to acknowledge the substantial amendments already made in response to industry concerns, mischaracterizes the bill's targeted scope, and ignores the urgent documented need to protect Californians from algorithmic discrimination.”
The tech lobbying group argues her bill, which is intended to regulate high-risk areas like health care where decision-making AI systems might be used, will instead extend into mundane uses of AI software in the business context.
