BSA Applauds Enactment of Consumer Privacy Legislation in Indiana
WASHINGTON – May 2, 2023 – BSA | The Software Alliance welcomes the enactment of consumer privacy legislation in Indiana. Matthew Lenz, Senior Director of State Advocacy at BSA | The Software Alliance, released the following statement on yesterday’s enactment of SB 5.
“BSA applauds the enactment of a comprehensive consumer privacy law that creates strong privacy protections for the people of Indiana.
Indiana’s consumer data privacy legislation aligns with other state privacy laws that clearly reflect the distinct roles and obligations of different companies that handle consumer data, such as controllers and processors. The law also reflects a growing recognition by state legislatures about the need to protect consumer data consistently across state lines. We applaud the Indiana legislature’s efforts to draw from existing state privacy laws to establish workable requirements that will protect consumer privacy.
Indiana residents now have a comprehensive privacy law that protects their rights to access, correct, and delete their personal data. As we continue to see more states pass privacy bills into law, BSA will continue working with state lawmakers to address this important issue, while also working to pass a comprehensive federal consumer privacy law.”
